One Response to “The Mousetrap (William Macready as Hamlet, 1820’s)”
“Macready is making the ‘crawl’ towards the King originated by Kean. Marston describes how ‘with body prone, head erect, and eyes riveted on Claudius, he dragged himself nearer and nearer to him’ (Actors, I,p. 82) The staging follows the most common triangular arrangement, with the players upstage, the King, Queen, and Polonius (with staff) on one side, and Horatio, Hamlet, Ophelia on the other.” page 29 Hamlet Shakespeare in Production ed.
